The beach - Safe sheltered bathing and ideal
for water sports
South Sands beach, nestling just inside the mouth
of the Estuary offers very safe bathing and an ideal launching site
for all manner of water-based pursuits. Our own boathouse (an old
life boat station), right on the beach, provides facilities for
Wind-surfing, Sailing, Scuba-diving and Canoeing.
For boat owners we have a dinghy park and our own moorings just
off the beach; for those without, who want to go afloat, all manner
and size of boats can be hired from the South Sands Sailing staff
on the beach, based in the old life boat station.
In the Summer you can forget your car and take
the Ferry from the beach into Salcombe (10 minutes) and from there,
further up the Estuary to Kingsbridge or across the water to the
beautiful beaches and walks on the other side.
Of course, should the weather be un-cooperative,
you always have the relaxing amenities of the Hotel Leisure Complex
to fall back on.
There are many other attractions in the area
such as the Dart Valley Steam Railway, Dartington, Buckfast Abbey
and several National Trust Properties and Castles.
The National Trust also owns most of the coastline
and the South Devon Coastal Footpath which passes the front of the
Hotel and has many spectacular stretches. Dartmoor, with its rugged
and remote beauty, forms the northern boundary of the South Hams
and is easily reached, as are Torquay and the cities of Plymouth
and Exeter.
